Funded Project - Normal Project
Support for establishing a Medical Education Unit
We feel the urgent need to establish, within Patan Hospital (PH) structure, a Medical Education Unit (MEU). With the establishment of a MEU, equipped with the necessary resources, we believe, we could assist our faculty and thereby enhance the quality of the PH run training programs through:
- Availing relevant medical education literature (printed and electronic).
- Organizing appropriate training programs to enable our current (and future) PH faculty become competent clinical teachers.
- Helping develop appropriate instructional materials.
- Networking and collaborating with other MEUs both within and outside Nepal to share with and benefit from each other’s experience and strengths.

Patan Hospital (PH) is a 300 + bedded, not for profit, acute care, city hospital located in Lagankhel, (Lalitpur) within Kathmandu Valley. Each year it provides clinical care services to over a 300, 000 patients, of which 20, 000 are inpatients, perform about 16,000 operations, and conduct 7000 deliveries.
Besides providing medical care to the patients, PH is also actively engaged in the development of human resources for health and thereby contributing towards the improvement of health care system in Nepal. PH has been the main site for the practical training of the student Nurses from Lalitpur Nursing Campus for many decades. For the last several years, PH is involved in the training of medical students (25 Interns per year who studied medicine in various medical schools both within and outside Nepal) and postgraduate residents in the field of Family (General) Practice, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedics, Pediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynecology. These postgraduate programs belong academically to National Academy for Medical Sciences (NAMS) and to some extent Institute of Medicine of Tribhuvan Univeristy. PH has also undertaken providing short term trainings for paramedics in areas such as Anesthesia, Safe delivery etc. These paramedics are employee of the Ministry of Health, Government of Nepal are working in health care institutions located in remote rural areas of Nepal. In addition, PH regularly sponsors and supports courses for young doctors in the areas of Primary Trauma Care and Palliative Care.
Moreover, Patan Hospital is currently engaged towards the establishment of a new Patan University of Health Sciences (PUHS).
Despite such intensive (ongoing and planned) medical educational activities, we do not yet have an adequate infrastructure to provide our PH faculty the needed technical and logistical support. Needless to say, given how busy the clinicians are, lack of such support system only impedes the evolution of our faculty members to become (and remain) competent, enthusiastic and effective teachers.
It is in this context that we feel the urgent need to establish, within PH structure, a Medical Education Unit (MEU).
While Patan Hospital administration is committed to provide the needed manpower, physical space and basic sets of furniture required for the MEU, we are soliciting financial support from ANMF for procuring some basic equipment and some relevant medical educational resources (Please see below for the details). It is envisaged that the support thus received from ANMF will be utilized as a capital investment for creating the MEU. In other words, this is going to be a one time support from ANMF for this particular project. Since the recurrent cost will be borne by the PH, there is no question about the sustainability of this project.
PH will be more than happy to regularly update the local ANMF leadership about the progress being made with the support provided. A final report will be sent to ANMF on completion of the project.
